About noir AI characters

Noir describes a mood before it describes a genre: rain on the glass, neon through venetian blinds, a jazz club that is never quite empty and a case that does not add up. The characters talk the way people do in classic detective films, dry and guarded and quick with a line. Each is fictional and AI-generated, and each is 18 or older. The cast is easy to imagine: a private detective, a client whose story keeps changing, someone who knows more than they are saying.

Noir is an atmosphere, not a job title, so it overlaps with the Investigator role without being the same thing. In Filters, look for Mysterious under Personality, and for Intellectual if you want a character who solves things by talking. The profile’s backstory tells you who you are dealing with before the first question.

Pick your side of the desk. Tell the character you are the detective and they are the client, or the reverse, then put something on the table: a missing ledger, a name, a letter without a stamp. They answer in the tone of their profile, which here leans dry and guarded, and you steer with questions. Guests get 10 messages before signing up, and a free account gets 30 each day. A case can run for many evenings, because the chat stays in your chats list and you can pin it to keep it on top.

Questions, answered

What does noir mean for AI characters?
Noir is the mood of a classic detective film: rain, shadows, a city that keeps its secrets, dialogue that says less than it means. A noir character is fictional, generated by AI and 18 or older, with a name, a backstory and a guarded way of talking. The pace is slow, and the talking matters more than the action.
Can I play the detective in a noir roleplay?
Yes. Say in your first message that you are the detective and the character has just walked into your office with a problem. You can also take the client’s chair, or be a rival, a witness or an old friend with a favor to ask. The character keeps to the tone of its profile and answers from its side of the story.
Is noir the same as the investigator category?
They overlap without being the same. Investigator is a role: detectives and other mystery solvers. Noir is a mood that can belong to anyone in the story, a detective, a singer, a client. Each has its own page, so you can look at both.
Will a noir character remember the case?
Your messages stay in the chat, so the case is there when you come back, and for a clue buried deep in a long story you can remind the character in the chat. Separately, the character keeps short memory notes about you, such as your name and what you like, which you can read, edit or clear in the memory panel.
Is it free to chat with noir characters?
You can start for free: 10 messages as a guest, no account needed, then 30 a day on a free account. Premium has no daily message limit, subject to a fair-use guard.
